Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle

View Photos

Bamburgh is a beautiful coastal town dominated by one of the country’s most iconic castles, the Bamburgh Castle. It’s hard to miss, as it sits dramatically atop a basalt outcrop above the dunes, overlooking miles of golden sand beaches beloved by local surfers. Owing to its striking appearance, the castle has been used as a filming location for a number of television and film projects over the years.

The castle structure as seen today dates back to the 18th century, although the site has been settled since prehistoric times and during the summer you can see archaeologists at work here. Previous excavations have revealed some great finds, such as the Bamburgh Sword that dates back to the 7th century — an era when Bamburgh was the seat of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.
