Whitby & Whitby Abbey

Whitby has all the hallmarks of a traditional seaside resort with its picturesque harbour, sandy beaches, small bistros and quaint streets that have changed little since medieval times. Dominating the skyline here are the haunting clifftop ruins of the 13th century Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker’s legendary tale of Dracula. For an impressive panoramic view, follow the 199 steps from the village up to the cliffs. Another well-known figure connected to Whitby is the famous 18th century explorer Captain James Cook, who is commemorated by a statue here.
