Recently voted the best place to live in the UK, the town of Alnwick in Northumberland is just as lovely to visit. Characterised by its well preserved stone buildings and cobbled streets, the main attraction here is the formidable Alnwick Castle. This is the country’s second largest inhabited castle, having been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family for over 700 years. It’s also “home” to a number of movie and TV characters as well – the castle has stood in as Hogwarts in Harry Potter films and as Brancaster Castle in Downtown Abbey.
Adjacent to the castle is the magnificent Alnwick Garden that includes tranquil spaces such as the Cherry Orchard, the intriguing Poison Garden, grand cascades, water sculptures, a bamboo labyrinth and one of the world’s largest treehouses.
