Visit this valley in Argyll for its tranquil beauty but also for its density of ancient monuments, some dating back 5,000 years.
Kilmartin Glen, in Argyll, is not only famous for its tranquil beauty, but most notably for its density of ancient monuments, some dating back 5,000 years. Hundreds of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, including henges, standing stones and burial sites, are concentrated in this area, as well as the twin stone circles of Temple Wood and ruins of the Iron Age fortress of Dunnadd, unique for its stone carvings and “king’s footprints”. Visit the Kilmartin Museum to learn more about the archaeological findings, see the ancient artefacts in the indoor exhibition and get a map for a self-guided visit to the monuments, located within a 6-mile (10 km) radius of Kilmartin village.
