Visit this monastery that miraculously survived repeated Viking raids starting in the 8th century, only to be left derelict after the Reformation in the 16th century.
This tiny island in the Inner Hebrides holds one of Scotland’s most historic and sacred places, Iona Abbey, founded in AD 563 by St Columba. The monastery miraculously survived repeated Viking raids starting in the 8th century, only to be left derelict after the Reformation in the 16th century. Though some of the original structures lie in ruins today, the medieval abbey cathedral was beautifully restored by the Iona Community in the 1930’s and serves as an important pilgrimage site. Along with the evocative, monastic atmosphere, the old Celtic high crosses are an impressive sight here.
