Ullswater is the second biggest lake in the Lake District, offering the same stunning mountain scenery as Derwentwater and Lake Windermere but with far fewer visitors. There are still plenty of optional activities available here though, including kayaking, fishing, short cruises on the Ullswater Steamers, horse-riding and hill-walking.
A visit to the lake is not complete without walking to the beautiful Aira Force waterfall, surrounded by ancient woodland and dropping an impressive 70 feet (20 metres) into a narrow gorge. An old stone bridge adds to the picturesque setting and there is a small cafe by the car park, along with National Trust information panels describing the area and its history.
