About Isle of Skye & Scotland Vacation Packages

Scroll down if you want to know more about visiting the Isle of Skye. You’ll find the answers to frequently asked questions, plus we’ve gathered travel tips and itinerary recommendations from our local experts.

Where is the Isle of Skye?

Located in northwest Scotland, the Isle of Skye is part of the beautiful Highlands region.

At 639 square miles (1,656 square kilometres), Skye is the largest island in an archipelago known as the Inner Hebrides. Scattered off Scotland’s west coast, this island chain stretches for 240 kilometres (150 miles) from Skye in the north to Islay in the south.

Is the Isle of Skye worth visiting?

Absolutely, there are plenty of amazing things to see and do on the Isle of Skye. You might already recognise a few of Skye’s most well-known natural attractions. Indeed, the Old Man of Storr’s rocky pinnacles and the crystal-clear Fairy Pools are among the most photographed landscapes in the country.

As well as these popular sights, explore the rest of Skye and you’ll also uncover lots of lesser-known places.

It’s not all about the stunning scenery though. Skye is also home to lively towns and villages, including the island’s capital of Portree. Not to mention castles, distilleries, and other cultural attractions such as the dinosaur museum at Staffin.

There’s also a vibrant community of local artisans. Visit the likes of Edinbane Pottery or Skye Weavers for the perfect souvenir from your trip.

What can I see on the Isle of Skye?

Renowned for its epic landscapes, there are countless natural wonders on the Isle of Skye. To help you narrow down the list, here’s a round-up of the top 5 places you won’t want to miss:

What can I do on the Isle of Skye?

The best way to spend your time on Skye depends on what your interests are. Whether that’s culture, history, outdoor activities, or a little of everything, you’ll find plenty to add to your travel wish list.

These are just some of the top things to do on Skye:

  • Take a boat trip to see seal colonies at Loch Coruisk
  • Immerse yourself in folklore as you stroll around the Fairy Glen
  • Wander Portree's colourful harbourfront
  • Delve into MacLeod clan history at Dunvegan Castle
  • Learn how single malt whisky is made at Talisker distillery
  • Walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs at An Corran Beach
  • Tuck into delicious Scottish food at award-winning restaurants

How do I get to the Isle of Skye?

It’s easy to drive to Skye, thanks to a road bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh on the Scottish mainland. Or you could travel by boat, using one of the regular ferry connections operated by Calmac. These include sailings from locations such as:

  • Mallaig, Scottish mainland
  • Tarbert, Isle of Harris
  • Loch Maddy, North Uist

How should I plan my visit to the Isle of Skye?

If you want to spend time on the Isle of Skye during your trip to Scotland, travel with Nordic Visitor and you can leave the planning to us. Our travel experts have crafted itineraries based on the most scenic routes and top attractions. Plus, we only work with trusted local suppliers.

What’s more, you’ll get a dedicated travel consultant who’ll use their insider insight to arrange your trip for you. With your accommodation and transport taken care of, you’re free to relax and look forward to a hassle-free trip.

You’ll also be able to personalise your tour package by choosing from a range of optional activities and day trips. For instance, you could take a tour of Skye’s Talisker Distillery or treat yourself to afternoon tea in Edinburgh.

Where can I stay on the Isle of Skye?

As well as rugged mountains and dramatic coastline, the Isle of Skye is peppered with charming villages. The island’s capital, Portree, has the most variety when it comes to accommodation options.

But villages like Dunvegan, Broadford and Armadale are also excellent spots to overnight. And because the island is accessible by bridge, it’s also possible to stay on the mainland, in Kyle of Lochalsh village, for example.

Instead of combing through all the options, save yourself the hassle and book with Nordic Visitor. This way, you’ll stay in a selection of B&Bs, guest houses and hotels handpicked by our local experts. What’s more, enjoy a touch of luxury when you upgrade to Superior accommodation on your trip.

Good to know: The island’s popularity means it’s best to book your trip well in advance.

How many days should I spend on the Isle of Skye?

How long you stay on Skye depends on the length of your Scotland trip and what else you’d like to see during your getaway. And while you can visit the Isle of Skye on a day tour, we highly recommend spending at least 2 or 3 nights here.

This will give you time to soak up more of the local culture and discover the island at a more leisurely pace. Plus, you’ll have time for activities and excursions such as hiking, taking a boat trip or visiting distilleries.

How can I get around on the Isle of Skye?

One of the most convenient ways to get around the Isle of Skye is to rent a car and take a road trip. You’ll also find that there are a variety of guided Skye tours on offer.

For the freedom to go at your own pace, a road trip is the best way to go. Opt for a Scotland self-drive tour with Nordic Visitor, and you’ll get a detailed itinerary designed by our local experts. Not to mention a travel guide packed with information on the country’s must-see attractions.

If you’d rather let someone else take care of the driving, go for a guided tour. At Nordic Visitor, you can choose from small group or privately guided tours of Scotland.

On our small group trips, you’ll be one of up to 15 guests travelling in a comfortable minibus with a guide and dedicated driver. Exploring in a minibus means you can reach more places than if you were in a large coach. Plus, with fewer fellow travellers, you’ll have extra opportunities to ask questions and get to know your guide.

Or for the ultimate personal travel experience, pick a privately guided tour. You and your travel companions will discover Skye and other top spots like Loch Ness and Glen Coe with your very own guide.

Depending on the size of your group, you’ll travel in a private car or minibus. This could be the perfect option for your next couples getaway or memorable family escape.

Suggested Isle of Skye itinerary

If you’re travelling to Scotland from abroad, we recommend experiencing the island as part of a longer trip. This could mean combining a few days on Skye with a longer Scotland tour from Edinburgh.

To get you started, here’s an idea for a 3-day Isle of Skye itinerary.

Day 1: Southern Skye and Portree
Arrive on Skye’s southeast coast via the bridge from the mainland and journey north towards Portree. Along the way, enjoy a tour and tasting at Talisker Distillery.

Then head for the Fairy Pools, Sligachan or Elgol. On a clear day, you’ll get breathtaking views of the Cuillin mountains from any of these scenic spots. Finish the day with a stroll around Portree and a hearty dinner.

Day 2: Discover the Trotternish Peninsula
Today, explore the otherworldly landscapes of Skye’s far north. Stop at the likes of Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Fairy Glen to admire the beautiful scenery. You’ll also come across An Corran Beach and the nearby Staffin Dinosaur Museum on your way.

Round off the day with a delicious meal at one of the island’s top restaurants near the village of Dunvegan.

Day 3: Spend a day in northwest Skye
Wander along the golden sands of Coral Beach or take a boat trip on Loch Dunvegan for a different perspective on the coastline. Later, learn about clan history and visit the pretty gardens at Dunvegan Castle.

Or venture to Neist Point Lighthouse, the island’s most westerly point. In summer, you’ll find seabird colonies nesting on the towering cliffs here. Bring your time on Skye to a close by driving back to the mainland. Or take a ferry to the Outer Hebrides and continue your island-hopping adventure.

Highly recommend Nordic Visitor

This is our second tour with Nordic Visitor. Agents used before the tour were always very prompt with responses to our questions. During the tour, we found the accommodation perfect, guide very informative and friendly, and the driver got used to where we needed to go without any problems. We would definitely use Nordic Visitor again!

Smooth experience

Throughout the years we have travelled a lot, but never with a group tour. This trip was our first time and it did not disappoint. The tour guide, the bus driver, our fellow passengers, the weather, accommodation, variety of activities, and how smoothly everything went makes me question why we never toured like this before!

David, United States

An unforgettable holiday

It was an unforgettable holiday. They took care of everything, and we got to wonder and explore with little hassle. If you want to visit Scotland (or anywhere else Nordic Visitor has tours) they are the way to do it. Already talking about our next adventure with Nordic Visitor.

An indescribably fantastic experience!

We are two middle-aged women who had never been to the UK before. My sister-in-law always wanted to go to Scotland, so I started researching and came upon Nordic Visitor through internet searches. I checked for reviews and found the company to be highly recommended. I started corresponding with Kirsten. She was extremely kind, very helpful and was able to put my nervous mind at ease. The package she put together for us was perfect! From my first email, the airport pick up and drop off service, and the tour with Dave, it was an indescribably fantastic experience!

Andrew, United States
Classic Scotland, June 2023

Top notch

The tour package materials were top notch. Spiral bound itinerary, recommended activities, restaurant recommendations and the large-scale road map of Scotland were a nice touch. Magdalena, our Nordic Visitor representative, responded promptly to our questions. Accomodation was all great.

Perfect vacation!

For our 50th wedding anniversary, we trusted Nordic Visitor to make our vacation a memorable one, and they made it beyond special. Chris, our tour planner, did everything to accommodate our needs and answered our questions quickly. It was an absolutely perfect vacation!

We were in good hands

As first-time visitors to Edinburgh, and senior citizens, our choice to use Nordic Visitor was an excellent one. The welcome package we received at the hotel was really helpful, with our tour vouchers, maps and restaurant recommendations. We would not have known what hotel to select and the one selected for us was perfect. The choice of tours offered was perfect for a 5-day visit. So glad to learn about the Royal Mile and visit the castle. The trip through the Highlands and Loch Ness was beautiful. Our travel agent, Rebecca, always quickly responded to email questions prior to departure. Thank you! Nordic Visitor made our trip easy and rewarding. We were in good hands.
